Tequila Collector Uses Shelves to House His Collection

Tequila Collector Uses Shelves to House His Collection

Posted by Rebecca Parsons on

Fernando Ortiz is a tequila conoisseur. He was searching for a way to display his personal collection in his home and began looking into non-traditional shelving options. He wanted shelves that he could adjust the height of that didn’t look bulky. When he stumbled upon Modern Shelving, he knew he'd found his match.

“I loved the small profile of Modern Shelving and the infinite adjustability of the heights,” says Ortiz.

Ortiz began chatting with the customer service team about which stock shelving unit would best match his needs. His experience with customer service was a positive one and he found them helpful, but it often took a while to receive responses to his questions.

When the shelves arrived, Ortiz got to work assembling them. A DIYer, Ortiz was confident he could get the shelves installed himself, but a missing set of instructions increased the challenge level. He eventually found a video online for a similar set of shelves, which helped make the process smoother and helped the shelves turn out well. Ortiz is hopeful that Modern Shelving will add step-by-step guides for those planning to do the installation themselves.

Although there was some frustration involved with the installation process, Ortiz was happy with the ultimate result.

“I love them,” says Ortiz. “Especially the ability to set different heights. I like how sleek they look and how light they are considering how much weight they can hold.”

The shelves are in Ortiz’s home bar and he uses them to house mainly tequila and mezca bottles. Although the bottles are his personal collection, Ortiz does offer educational tastings.

“There is a lot of misinformation on what tequila is and how it can taste,” says Ortiz. “My education classes aim to provide a basis for how to appreciate tequila.”

His tastings take place in his home and are typically corporate tastings that go over the history of tequila through a tasting of three to five different expressions. The classes can accommodate anywhere from eight to 50 people. Ortiz also provides consultations for brands on possible future expressions.

Although Ortiz is happy with his shelves, he is hoping to work with the Modern Shelving design team to incorporate channels or provisions LED lights. He’s experimented with installing lights on the verticals or underneath the shelves, but so far has been encountering roadblocks. But, in the near future, Ortiz hopes to have his shelving unit equipped with lights to prominently display his tequila collection at all hours. Stay tuned.
