When did you first develop an interest in design and architecture?

Growing up with a passion for art, I spent my free time drawing, sketching, and painting. When it came time for college, I was uncertain about what to pursue for my degree. My father suggested architecture, given my deep love for art. Initially, I felt hesitant and confused, unsure if this path was right for me. However, as days, months, and years went by, I found myself falling in love with what I was doing. It became my passion and continually fueled my artistic endeavors. I was grateful to my dad for encouraging me to push past my limits.

Tragically, months before I graduated and just ahead of my thesis defense, my father passed away. Not long before that, I had also lost my dog, my best friend, and my companion during the sleepless nights spent on submissions and projects. In an instant, I felt my will to continue fade. However, my friends and family helped me and kept motivating me not to give up.

During my father's wake, I experienced a moment that shook me and made me realize I needed to finish my degree. Even though my dad and dog were no longer physically with me, they remained in my heart, along with my mom and family, who continued to support me. This realization motivated me to complete my thesis andpersevere in my degree despite the challenges.

For nearly two weeks, I travelled back and forth for 5-8 hours every day from my home in the province to my university in the city during my father's wake. I'm proud to say I succeeded, even when life threw rocks in my path. I finished my degree, knowing that my dad and my dog, who is in heaven, would be proud of me, as would my family, who never stopped supporting and encouraging me every day. That's what's kept me motivated, and I have never stopped believing up until this day.

Where did you go to school and what is your degree in?

I proudly earned my Bachelor of Science in architecture from Far Eastern University, equipping myself with the skills and knowledge to excel in the field.

Where did you work before Modern Shelving/what were some projects you

worked on?

I have worked with six different companies, each focusing on various aspects of architecture. My first job was with an Australian company, where I was responsible for estimating and designing the framing and roof trusses of structures. Following that, I worked as a team lead during my architectural internship, where I designed large-scale projects, primarily government buildings such as city halls, public markets, fire stations, subdivisions, etc.

When the pandemic hit, I discovered the possibility of working from home. I connected with a client in the U.S. and took on a role as an estimator for his company, where I estimated both residential and commercial projects. I later resigned to take the architecture board exam to obtain my license as an architect. After passing the exam, I managed two jobs—working as a lighting designer in the morning and as a painting estimator at night.

Unfortunately, I fell ill and needed to take some time off to recover. During this period, I had the pleasure of working with Modern Shelving, which was a great experience since they were so good to me.

When did you first start working for MS? Why did it feel like a match for your interests/skill set?

I was browsing job listings when I came across Modern Shelving. I submitted my CV for a 3D designer role, as I have a strong passion for 3D design and love discovering new software tools. To my surprise, the hiring process moved quickly, and they trusted me to start immediately. I am very grateful to John, Manya, and the entire Modern Shelving team for their support. They have confidence in my skills and work, even though we haven't known each other for long. I truly appreciate this opportunity they have given me.

What do you feel you uniquely contribute to Modern Shelving?

I believe it’s gratitude that drives me. The trust they have shown me inspires me to do my best and greatly contribute to the company. I am also motivated by how they started the company, as it aligns with my dream of starting my own business in the future.

Although I currently lack the financial resources and connections to do so, Modern Shelving has become my inspiration since I joined. When I met John and heard his story, it ignited my ambition to succeed as well. Modern Shelving has provided me with invaluable knowledge, not only in architecture but also in business.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

My inspiration comes from my clients. By engaging in conversation with them, I learn about their preferences and what they desire. Understanding my clients helps me discover their likes and hobbies, which is the foundation for my designs. I incorporate their tastes into the designs I create, ensuring that they reflect their identity and preferences. Though I live alone at times and my ideas may feel empty, I find inspiration again by spending just five minutes with my dogs. They help me relieve stress and reignite my motivation to create.

What have been some of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?

I appreciate clients who are friendly and positive. Their energy during meetings creates a light conversation that is engaging and strengthens the connection between us. I strongly believe that effective communication is crucial in the design process. It not only helps to create outstanding design solutions but also fosters a strong sense of trust and confidence between clients and designers. By maintaining open dialogue and actively listening to client needs, designers can better understand their vision, ultimately leading to more successful and satisfying outcomes.

How are you able to creatively engineer solutions that satisfy customers’ needs and MS’s values?

I consistently prioritize adhering to the meticulous standards set by Modern Shelving, a company known for its commitment to quality and innovation. Each design undergoes a comprehensive testing process and is developed with careful consideration, ensuring that it meets the highest criteria for performance and usability before moving into production. This rigorous approach not only guarantees the reliability of our products but also enhances the overall client experience.

When I engage with clients, I take the opportunity to provide an in-depth explanation of our system. I guide them through the various elements of our design process, illustrating how we integrate their vision with our technical expertise. I emphasize our ability to create customized shelving solutions that reflect their unique style while simultaneously upholding the essential qualities of strength and durability. By providing this detailed insight, I empower clients to fully appreciate the craftsmanship and value embedded in our offerings, fostering a sense of trust and satisfaction in their decisions.

Do you have a particular style or way that you approach your projects?

I always strive to make meetings as friendly as possible. By keeping the conversation light, I encourage clients to engage and share their stories. This approach helps me understand their hobbies, preferences, and what they wish to achieve in their space. Gaining insight into how the client thinks allows me to create a layout that fosters a connection and provides satisfaction with the design I offer.

What do you like about architecture and design?

I am passionate about how architecture and design can shape our experiences of the environment. This perspective influences my approach to building connections with my clients, not only in Modern Shelving but also in the architectural designs I have created in the past. I believe that spaces should be functional and convey a sense of purpose, which makes them inspiring, almost as if they are telling a story. The most rewarding aspect of designing is witnessing your vision come to life: Seeing my concepts manifest into a physical reality makes all the stress and effort feel profoundly rewarding.

What are some of the biggest challenges of your job? The biggest rewards?

I believe that earning a good income is often challenging. Despite having obtained your license and working hard for many years, your income may only cover your basic monthly needs. It is particularly difficult to manage right now due to the ongoing inflation in our country, compounded by the effects of the pandemic. We are still in the process of recovering from the losses we experienced during that time. However, even under these circumstances, if you love what you do, you can still feel happy and fulfilled, and I think that is important.

The greatest reward I've experienced comes from the unwavering support of John and Manya. Their confidence in us and the opportunities they provide, like out-of-town experiences with the team, are not just breaks from reality; they create bonds that we will cherish for a lifetime.

What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

In my free time, I immerse myself in activities that nurture my well-being, such as reading, playing games, and cherishing moments with my dogs. I believe that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial. This balance fuels my motivation and empowers me to surpass my limits. It's vital to dedicate time not only to work but also to prioritize my mental health. Engaging in these hobbies, especially spending weekends with my dogs, greatly enhances my mental and spiritual well-being.
