As a business consultant, Jerry Janis spends a lot of time in his home office working on strategy and technology projects. He was looking for something to complete his space when he came across an ad for Modern Shelving in Dwell magazine. Originally, he hadn’t been considering shelves, but after seeing the ad and discovering that customization was an option, Janis decided shelves were the way to go.
Janis was attracted to Modern Shelving thanks to their industrial aesthetic. He had a stainless-steel desk in his office and very little other furniture, and he wanted to keep it that way.
“[Modern Shelving] has that industrial, commercial look to it, and the lines are very clean,” says Janis. “I wanted something very minimalistic, and it achieved that.”
Janis worked with a designer at Modern Shelving to create a set of shelves that worked with his space. He has a large window about four or five feet off the wall, so he incorporated the window into his design. After speaking with the designer, he learned more about his customization options and together they created a design that would perfectly meet Janis’s needs.
Once the shelves arrived, Janis’s partner got to work assembling them. Janis’s only qualm with Modern Shelving is that the instructions weren’t thorough enough. It took a while for Janis’s partner to get everything figured out, but once he did, he was able to put everything together fairly quickly.
Janis is thrilled with how his shelves turned out and loves how they maintain the minimalistic look of his office. He has a plant on top of each of the three bays, which receive plenty of natural light thanks to the windows. He also stores an assortment of books, glass pieces that he collects, and some awards he’s won throughout his career. Perfectly framed around the window, the shelves tie Janis’s office together nicely.
