Based out of Portland, Oregon, Liz Kuball works as an architectural and interior photographer. Over the years, she's photographed for publications like Dwell, Monocle, Architectural Digest, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, as well as for brands such as Aesop, Ace Hotel, and Floyd.
“Photographing architecture and interiors is all about a sense of place,” says Kuball. “Highlighting the architect or designer’s work, noticing the details that make the project unique, and bringing the viewer into these incredible buildings that I’m privileged to spend time in.”
Kuball has a small collection of art and photography books that she was looking to display in her hundred-year-old Southeast Portland home. The books are heavy, so she wanted a set of shelves that could not only support their weight, but could also accommodate their large dimensions. She also wanted something that could anchor to the wall, so she didn’t have to worry about the shelves falling over or collapsing.
Kuball took to the Internet, researching shelving systems that met her needs and would work in the small space she planned to install them. Eventually, she stumbled upon Modern Shelving.
“I liked the minimalist aesthetic,” says Kuball. “As well as the ability to find the exact shelves to meet my needs.”
Kuball placed her order and when the shelves arrived, she hired Chris Jones of Portland Art Installation to tackle the install. Kuball had worked with Jones in the past when he installed art throughout her house and Jones was willing to help with her new shelving unit. After several hours, Jones had the shelves up and running and Kuball was pleased with the results.
Kuball’s shelves are situated in her living/dining area. On them, she displays her art and photography books, as well as a few nick knacks.
“I’m thrilled with my shelves,” says Kuball. “I had a relatively small area to work with, and I’ve managed to store and display my collection of books in a way that’s not only functional but aesthetically pleasing.”
