Sreya Halder has been a content creator for most of her life. At 12, she began posting her art online to platforms like Tumblr and Instagram. In 2020, she moved over to TikTok and her account blew up. She transitioned from art to fashion, eventually adding in tastemaking and lifestyle content.
As someone who spends a lot of time online, Halder stumbled upon Modern Shelving when she began looking for shelving and furniture brands for her new apartment in New York. She was drawn to Modern Shelving’s unique approach to shelving and storage. Here, Halder shares more about her work as content creator, how she first go tinto fashion, and what she specifically loves about Modern Shelving.
Is content creation your full-time gig?
I was doing it part-time throughout college, stopped for a few years while focusing on a different startup idea, and now I’m full-time as a content creator on both Instagram and TikTok. I love every second of it. I love getting to be creative with shooting and editing and experimenting with color grading and different forms of storytelling, while also getting to talk about things I care deeply about.
How did you get into fashion?
I’ve always been pretty girly, wanting an excuse to dress up as a teenager and in college. But I don’t think I ever had a good sense of my personal style and what it meant to be “into” fashion until I started my last company at the age of 23.
I was working on a platform that introduced people to emerging brands from around the world, and through that, I discovered so many unique designers and up-and-coming brands that felt truer to me than what trendy brands were selling. I started to realize the beauty of that kind of fashion, and I’ve since dedicated my career to helping emerging brands and highlighting real designs with real quality. That is what fashion is about.
What were you in the market for when you were looking for shelves?
In general, I just wanted to look for more unique/bespoke pieces made by smaller designers over things that are mass-produced and their origins untraceable. I wanted something with a story!
How did you discover Modern Shelving?
I come across a ton of small brands on Instagram. When I started looking for shelving/furniture brands to include in my new apartment in New York, I came across the brand and really loved how it focuses on this specific niche with a really unique vision on how to approach shelves and storage in a home. It can be both for utility and decor at the same time.
How was your experience working with the design team to order your shelves?
Really great! They were super informative when it came to finding the right size for my space and how I could potentially use the shelves.
Where in your apartment are your shelves?
I keep them in my dining area. We have a tighter space, natural for a New York apartment, but we do have a little area for a dining table and the wall was the perfect size to fit the shelves. They hang over our four-seater, so we can put up books and homeware for decor and also easily pull candles down to use for tablescaping.
Are you happy with your shelves? Why/why not?
Yes I love them! I love how modular they are and easy to install.
How do they tie together your space?
The color scheme just works really well with what I wanted to do with the space. We went for warm tones like orange and russet brown, and complemented that with more muted greens so it feels like a pop of color in a space that is more earthy.
Has anyone had the chance to see your shelves?
We’ll be having a housewarming soon! But online everyone has loved the way I’ve styled them.
